State Route 530 Trafton Creek & Schoolyard Creek Fish Passage

State Route 530, MP 24.40 to 24.90 and 25.90 to 26.00
Snohomish County, WA

When fish can not spawn upstream or reach traditional rearing areas, populations decrease and may not survive locally. Two of the most vital recovery tools include the correction of human-made fish passage barriers and fish protection through properly screening surface water diversions. This project is one of those human-made fish passage barriers, including a 24″ wide by 77″ long concrete passage in the Schoolyard River which has allowed the migratory spawning species to travel back to their native grounds up the Schoolyard river and is currently restoring the species.

Washington State Department of Transportation has solicited for hundreds of new wildlife preserving fish passages to be installed in Washington State, and for this project, Tunista entered into the Washington State Mentor Protégé project with Kiewit Construction, with Tunista performing the Schoolyard Creek Fish Passage and Kiewit performing the installation of the Trafton Creek Fish passage a few miles South of State Route 530.

This project presented a multitude of challenges, including, but not limited to, building a temporary lane diversion or “shoofly” adjacent to 5 individually classified wetlands, fish exclusion with sane netting, shocking and temporary transplant of species, continuous environmental monitoring for the stream that was diverted through the construction zone during the work, removal of an existing 5′ diameter x 80″ long steel pipe culvert and ultimately installation of nearly a million pounds of precast concrete box culvert modular assemblies with wingwalls. The project concluded with SR530 reinforcing, structural build up, paving, guardrails, for the final sequences to be removal of the shoofly, final restoration, and landscaping.
