I-90 Coal Mine Wall MP 18.85 to MP 23.10

This is the grI-90, King County, WA State

WA State Dept. of Transportation (WSDOT) set out to rehabilitate the median between east and west bound traffic on I-90 in the spring of 2021, with a very quick turnaround. The goal of this project was to get a media drain filter mix installed that would filter contaminants out of roadway stormwater runoff before it made its way naturally down the median swale and into the small tributaries that feed Soderman Creek.

This project, although smaller in value, presented unique challenges in timeline constraints, procurement, and available workspace. WSDOT only allowed a short window that the team could take space and impact traffic on I-90, so quality execution was a must. Together with Ceccanti, Tunista Construction was able to get the custom WSDOT filter mix delivered, ready-mixed, to the site inside dumps to limit impact to the existing guardrail. The team worked ahead of the import and kept things moving on time, facing procurement challenges with the mixed components for the Media Filter materials along the way due to supply and logistical shortages.

The project was completed safely, with no near misses or incidents, on time and on budget even after having faced some sizable obstacles with a rapid schedule and challenging material procurement conditions.
