Hood Street Facilities & South Tacoma Pump Station Seismic Upgrades

Tacoma Washington

The City of Tacoma Public Works Department needed new seismic and nonconductive 42″-48″ diameter steel pipe spools installed on their 650′ diameter x 20′ deep concrete reservoir located in the downtown Tacoma Washington area. Tunista Construction was contracted to perform the extremely technical and demanding excavation work for (4) locations, which was inclusive of utilizing a slide rail, positive reinforced shoring system that was fully engineered to accept all the loading requirements being immediately adjacent to the reservoir and several historic buildings that were initially built in the early 1930’s. The pits were 20′ wide x 24″ long x 30′ deep on average and a very safe, technical approach was used for pre-construction efforts, through planning and ultimately the safe, successful execution of another deep utility excavation and installation in the midst of very challenging technical requirements with a safe and practical approach, historic preservation, a complex environmental set of conditions, all while maintaining a solid, structural surrounding area during the course of excavation.
