Repair Substation #2 at Naval Base Kitsap

2810 Thresher Road
Silverdale, Washington 98315

Tunista Construction was tasked with removing several thousand tons of incorrectly procured and placed ballast rock, grading to design grades and slopes and then re-placing all of the 8,000ohm replacement ballast rock for Substation #2 at Bangor Naval Base Kitsap, for its primary substation adjacent to the powerhouse, with secondary feed from Bonneville and PSE.

This project presented numerous challenges with sourcing the sole supplier of this particular ballast rock, working through challenging logistics for trucking, ferry requirements for alternate routes, outages and sequencing for safe placement and continued electrical operational readiness for the client and the United States Navy, with selectively closing specific sections of the substation, allowing for safe work performance.

Tunista Construction worked collaboratively with all parties to ensure a successful completion within the limited time frame available, while also removing contaminated soils that were found through the course of construction, with all environmental requirements being met for removal, safe storage, testing and ultimately disposal at the appropriate accredited facility. This project further demonstrates Tunista Constructions ability to tackle technically demanding, dangerous work, and perform it safely and efficiently, all while being mindful of continued operations and environmental awareness.
