The Clover Park Technical College needed an upgrade for the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Technology division of their Lakewood Washington campus and sought out Mortenson Construction to enter into this $35M GCCM project for the campus.
Tunista Construction was awarded the contract for all site civil activities which were inclusive of: Utility cut, cap, and demolition, 10,000cy of contaminated materials export, sequential site utility demolition, all site utilities for gas, water, sewer, fire and a Contech storm water detention gallery with inspection ports and diffusing chambers, as well as a new roundabout entrance into the primary parking lot and the subsequent overflow parking lots with all the site grading package.
This project was another great example of Tunista Construction’s ability to perform work safely and efficiently on an active school campus, with limited access routes and congested multi-trade required building sites to maintain a rigorous construction schedule intended to capitalize on small windows of site availability without students present for more safety critical activities and temporary utility outages.
The partnership and alliance between the State of Washington, Clover Park Technical College, Mortenson Construction and Tunista Construction was developed and further strengthened through a challenging discovery of nearly 10,000 cubic yards of contaminated soils that was under the building from when this campus was a military equipment cleaning facility from the late 1940’s.
Tunista presented a working plan and worked with Mortenson Construction and a local testing agency to stockpile the material in an adjacent owned property in a manner that was more lending for testing to reduce any unnecessary costly overruns with additional export. In doing this, it also provided an opportunity for the critical path of the schedule to not be altered, and to keep the project on track
