Repair Skylights, Roof Drains, and Curtain Walls at Brooke Army Medical Center
In September 2014, Tunista Construction, LLC (TCL) was awarded an $8M SATOC with the Mobile District of the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide a full range of new construction and repair services with incidental design in support of the MEDCOM support mission at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This is the DoD’s largest medical facility and supports more wounded warriors than any other facility in the country.
TCL and our teaming partner, Cool Roofing Systems (CRS), completed the final phase of work for the $3.5M roof repair and skylight replacement task order at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) in May 2015. The objective for this project included repairs to exterior curtain walls, installation of new drains on the existing roof and replacement of four (4) skylight systems in various locations throughout the facility. TCL, CRS and Chamberlin San Antonio, LLC, worked in conjunction to repair and reseal the interior and exterior of glass and the curtain walls located at the Women’s Health entrance and the main entrance.
Tunista Construction is honored to have received this project as this medical facility is considered the Flagship of Army Medicine. San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) is situated at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and is part of Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and the U.S. Army Medical Command. BAMC is the command element over all Army medical facilities in the San Antonio area, including SAMMC. It is a University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and USUHS teaching hospital, and is home to the Army Burn Center. Notably, advanced rehabilitative services are provided at the Center for the Intrepid, a unique facility that is at the cutting edge of warrior care.
This facility is one of the Nation’s premier medical facilities, offering highly sophisticated medical care for service members, family members, civilians, and veterans. SAMMC is a 425-bed, state-of-the-art medical facility, playing a critical role in patient care, including care of Wounded Warriors in Transition from the Global War on Terrorism. The medical center is also the only stateside DOD Level I Trauma Center and receives more than 5,700 emergency room visits each month.
During the first phase of the project, Cool Roofing installed over 175 drains on the existing roof in under six (6) weeks, giving USACE and the BAMC Facility Management team a shining example of the outstanding work our team is known for throughout the United States.
The installation of the three smaller panel systems began in March and was completed in early April. The final phase, which consisted of the replacement of the existing skylight panel and frame system, was completed in May.
